Castile soaps
Hello there my friends today I wanted to give you some info on one of our latest product additions hope you like like.
What is Castile Soap?
Centuries ago in the Castile region of Spain an all-vegetable-based soap was made. Plentiful, local olive-oil inspired the recipe and set it apart as a soap not made from animal-fat (tallow). With great versatility and natural cleaning power, this tried-and-true formula has become commonly known as Castile Soap.

What is the difference between the bar and liquid?
J.R. Watkins Castile Liquid and Bar Soaps are both made with nourishing coconut and olive oils. Different basic salts are heated with the oils to create a fluid, liquid soap verses a hard, bar soap.
Why is J.R. Watkins making Castile Soap?
Soap making is tradition at J.R. Watkins. Since the turn of the century, we have been offering pure soaps. We’re excited to re-introduce the tradition of vegetable-oil based soaps — a natural product that really works. Free from dyes and harsh chemicals, this simple formula remains pure and safe.

A history of watkins products and watkins home business opportunity
J. R. Watkins Co. got its start in Stearns County
MARILYN SALZL BRINKMAN, SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
3:53 p.m. CDT March 12, 2015
From its modest start in Stearns County, the J.R. Watkins Co. grew into a million-dollar business. The company sold the famous Watkins spices, extracts, beverage mixes, baking products, personal care products, medical remedies, cosmetics and perfumes, cleaning products, agricultural products for both cattle and swine, and, of course, his red liniment.
Duane Stanley, whose great-great-grandmother, Zelinda (Hagen) Wood, married B. U. Watkins in 1871, wrote a short history of the relationship of J. R. Watkins to his family and the area in 2005 for the Kimball Area Historical Society. Called "Watkins Products, born on Maine Prairie," Stanley writes that J. R. Watkins is "arguably Maine Prairie's most successful native son."
Although J.R. was born 7 miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio, and his history usually begins in Plainview, in southeastern Minnesota, his sister, Julia (Watkins) Frost wrote in her family history, "Annals of Our Ancestors," that J. R. came to Maine Prairie in 1862 at age 21.
Stanley writes, "While living in his father's (B.U. Watkins) home on the west shore of Pearl Lake, J. R. mixed his first batches of Watkins Red Liniment — the foundation of the J. R. Watkins Medical Co. — in a barrel in the kitchen. Although it hardly appeared so at the time, this was the first step toward success and immense personal wealth."
He purchased his patent on the red liniment in 1868 when he moved to Plainview. A small shed served as his laboratory. People who do not know about his Stearns County connection believe J. R. began his business in Plainview.
In those days, traveling salesmen were an accepted method of bringing goods to the people around the country. Watkins used that unique method of salesmanship because it "allowed him to bypass the local pharmacists who resisted 'patent medicines' that usurped their role in mixing medicines directly for the customer," according to Stanley.
J.R. Watkins was so confident in the benefits of his liniment that he introduced the "Trial Mark" bottle in 1869. Through door-to-door sales, Watkins gave customers a risk-free way to try his products by adding a molded "trial mark" to each bottle, with a money-back guarantee. Customers who tried his product but left enough in the bottle to stay above the mark could get a full refund if they were not satisfied.
Between 1889 and 1914, Watkins constructed six manufacturing buildings behind the Winona Administration Building. In 1914, a prominent 10-story building, designed by George Washington Maher to complement the look of the Administration Building, was completed. Between 1937 and 1939, 250,000 visitors toured the Watkins manufacturing plant.
In "Images of America," John Goplen wrote: "The J.R. Watkins Company … grew from a one-man company into the world's largest direct selling company, an international corporation spanning North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and England. Today the company is still in business selling the liniment that founder J. R. Watkins first bottled in 1868."
Goplen states that "For the first 50 years of the company's life, rural sales dominated the company's business. … The 'Watkins Men' not only sold quality products; they often brought news and local gossip to the farm families of rural America."
Watkins salesmen carried large black leather products cases with the Watkins label in gold lettering. The case opened up like a large tackle box with multiple shelves.
Watkins also believed in advertising, so he built one of the largest printing operations west of the Mississippi producing millions of pieces of literature ranging from advertising and company newspapers to calendars, cookbooks and almanacs advertising his products.
Watkins manufactured products that were sought by and sold to rural and city customers. By 1933, Watkins was the largest and oldest direct-selling company in the world, in every state of the United States.
To fill government contracts during World War II, Watkins produced dried eggs, powdered juice packets, vitamin tablets, hospital germicide, DDT and insecticide powder.
After WWII, the Watkins man was still the most important factor in the successful selling of Watkins products. It wasn't until the 1950s and 1960s that dramatic social change brought the demise of the once-familiar Watkins door-to-door salesmen.
More women were working outside the home. Watkins hired them to work in his research facility. But companies such as Avon, grocery stores and retail chain stores took customers away from the Watkins door-to-door sales people.
Watkins expanded to selling an agri-products line. His Watkins Research Farm was a national leader in feed research during the 1950s.
Goplen writes that the "Watkins Agri-Division showed strong sales during the late 1960s with many popular products such as Watkins MIN-VITE pre-mix of minerals and vitamins for both hogs and cattle. All products were tested at the Watkins Research Farm."
The Watkins Research Farm played an important role in Watkins' history for over 35 years, but by the end of 1971, Watkins decided to close the farm and sell the animals, equipment and property.
The Watkins company was an early pioneer of equal opportunities. Women and other workforce minorities, as sales persons, brought Watkins products into new households.
J.R. Watkins product labels continue to carry the founder's portrait even though J.R. died Dec. 21, 1911.
In 1978, the company filed for bankruptcy. In December of that year, entrepreneur Irwin Jacobs bought the remains of the business. Jacobs offered a new beginning for the company that has its roots in Stearns County.
A few years ago I visited the J.R. Watkins Museum in Winona. When I asked about Watkins' roots in Stearns County, I was told it was common knowledge that the connection was there, but Watkins himself never acknowledged that part of his life. They could not tell me why.
I have a bottle of Watkins lemon extract in my cupboard today.

PG's Mithun Is Selected By J.R. Watkins Co. For AOR Duties
- by Steve McClellan, February 12, 2015, 3:13 PM
- Recommend (3)
- Comment
It wasn't clear if the client previously had a designated AOR. Olson. also based in Minneapolis, did project work for the client but was not its agency of record.
Mithun is tasked with developing integrated campaigns for the 147-year-old brand whose portfolio includes an array of bath, body, health and home care products.
The new assignment comes as J.R. Watkins has experienced significant growth in the past five years, according to the company, doubling sales and partnering with national retailers such as Target, Menards, Whole Foods, Kroger and Rite Aid.
The firm cites recent Nielsen sales data that indicates Watkins is now second-ranked in the extracts business, led by its flagship Watkins Pure Vanilla Extract and seventh-ranked in the liquid hand-soap category. J.R. Watkins has also expanded in Canada by aligning with Loblaws Supermarkets and Shoppers Drug Mart.
J.R. Rigley, President and Chief Marketing Officer of J.R. Watkins, said, “We’ve been able to build upon J.R. Watkins’ door-to-door roots, while expanding into the retail space and broadening the range of products we craft. During such periods of transformational growth, it’s important to have the right partners at the table, which is why we selected Mithun as our new Agency of Record.”
The win follows the recent rebranding of Mithun, formerly known as Campbell-Mithun, which is part of Interpublic’s McCann Worldgroup.
Commenting on the appointment, Denis Budniewski, Mithun’s Director of Account Leadership and Growth, said, “Our companies have thrived during times of economic uncertainty by continuing to reinvent ourselves while remaining true to our roots. We are already fast at work developing strategies to deepen the connection J.R. Watkins has with its loyal enthusiasts while introducing the iconic brand to new audiences across North America.”

Recipe from the Watkins Products April Newsletter
Just got this one today enjoy!
Lip Smackin’ Mocha Pudding Cake
Preheat oven to 375°F/190°C. Combine first 5 ingredients in 9-inch/23-cm square baking dish; stir well to mix. Combine milk, oil and extract; stir into dry mixture. Swirl in chocolate chips. Combine brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa; sprinkle over batter.
Heat water in microwave safe container. Add mocha mix and stir until dissolved. Pour mixture over batter. Do not stir!
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until cake is sponge-like when touched in the center. Since this is a pudding cake, it will seem “gooey” and not appear to be completely done.
Presentation: Chill light-colored (white is best) dessert plates in the freezer. When very cold, drizzle in zigzag pattern with ice cream topping to design plate. Be sure to decorate near the edges, too. Place back in freezer.
Serving: Cake should be served warm. Place scoop of ice cream on side of dessert plate. Spoon pudding cake onto plate beside ice cream. Dust all with cinnamon. Garnish with strawberry fan and sprig of fresh mint, if desired.
1 cup/250 mL all-purpose flour
2 tbsp/30 mL Watkins Baking Cocoa
1 tbsp/15 mL Watkins Baking Powder
2/3 cup/160 mL sugar

newsletter tips
Since I am working on my own newsletter thought I would share this with anyone else who may be just starting out.
How To Create An Email Newsletter
by: Cynthia Minnaar
by: Cynthia Minnaar
A great way to build an email list is to publish an email newsletter and you can then sell products to your subscribers. Here are a few tips on how to create an email newsletter.
1. Maintain focus. A narrowly focused newsletter performs better than a broad themed one.
This is because it is easier to get people to subscribe to it. Also it is an excellent way to sell targeted niche products. As an example, publishing an email newsletter on putting it is likely to do better than a newsletter on golf in general.
2. Make use of a good auto-responder. It is very important that your email newsletter gets through spam filters and into a person's email inbox.
This is why you need to use a quality auto-responder. Get Response and Aweber are two of the best.
3. Always be consistent. This does not mean that you have to publish every day or even every week if you don't want to.
What is important is that you set a schedule and stick to it. If you decide on a monthly newsletter then consistently get your newsletter out every month on the same date so people get used to seeing it.
4. Include useful information. Bear in mind that email newsletters are not sales letters. You can send out solo email ads for that purpose.
When people receive useful information they will be glad they subscribe to your newsletter. Also the more unique information you can include in your newsletter the more subscribers you will get and keep.
5. Use your newsletter to sell advertising. Selling top sponsor adverts, bottom sponsor adverts, classified adverts and email solo adverts is a way you can make money. Just dont over advertise in your newsletter to the point that people can't find the quality information you provide.
6. Use it for Branding. Ensure that you get the header at the top of your newsletter. Also if you are going to include colors into your newsletter make it match the theme of your blog or website.
You will be doing a good job of branding your Internet business when people get used to seeing the same things over and over from you.
7. Publish several email newsletters. Many Internet marketers branch into multiple niches but neglect the things that were successful with when they first started.
By publishing a newsletter for every niche that you are involved in is a great way to make more money in that targeted niche. If you work at adding subscribers to every newsletter you have, you will be amazed at how much more income you can generate.
The above are a few tips on how to create an email newsletter. You will discover that an email newsletter that is published on a consistent basis, to people who choose to receive it, becomes a very valuable business asset.
